Hoya Vision Care has established itself over the decades as one of the leaders in ophthalmic lenses. For good reason, the brand created in Japan in the 1940s is one of the key pieces in optical innovation . As its communication likes to mention, this innovation is part of the heart of the company, which is also committed to social and environmental values.

Hoya Vision Care: it's all in the name!

In 2001, the city of Nishitokyo City , city of Tokyo prefecture, was founded. This new city was born from the merger between two cities, Tanashi and Hoya . The latter gave its name to the second largest manufacturer of ophthalmic lenses in the world.

Indeed, it was on November 1, 1941, that two brothers, Shoichi and Shigeru Yamanaka, decided to manufacture ophthalmic lenses. But the period is cloudy. A few days later, Japan attacked the base at Pearl Harbor by surprise and forced the United States to go to war.

At the end of the war, the market for optical lenses is not at the highest. The business of the two brothers then turned to the manufacture of crystal for domestic use by exploiting its glass melting technology. Then he produced lenses for cameras, or even medical equipment. The small company then named Tokyo Optical Glass Manufacturing becomes Hoya .


At the dawn of the 1960s, it was very successful, employing more than 30,000 people and is present in several countries.

The brand of innovation

Although the brand is active in several fields of activity, it is optical glass that remains its core business. Hoya becomes an innovative brand and develops many revolutionary technological advances, particularly in the field of anti-reflective coating . In 1963, Hoya became the first brand to apply an anti-reflective treatment to mineral glass. In 1980, it will be on organic lenses .

And the innovations do not stop there. In 1969, Hoya Vision Care created the first photochromic lens. In 2001, the brand launched Nulux EP, the first single vision lens to use calculations integrating visual acuity and eyeball rotation.

Hoya Vision Care has since been, along with Essilor , the world leader in ophthalmic lenses. A golden silmo was awarded to its Hoyalux lens, allowing it to bring normal vision to its wearer in all directions in 2004. The Hoyalux iD My Style lens was voted optical product of the year. With this lens, it is possible to optimize the progressives for each wearer, by associating Freeform technology with software controlled by the optician.

Recently, Hoya launched Hoya MiYOSmart Vision, the first myopia curbing glass by myopic defocus. This lens strengthens Hoya Vision Care's place in medical, but also social and environmental issues.
